There are so many fun old cars that would make fun conversions, but most have either been scrapped or have prices that look like phone numbers. The problem with "practical & economical" retrofits is that the cars from 20-30 years ago are both infested with outdated electronics that will be a nightmare to sort out, and many cars from that era are not particularly desirable. One good thing for the "practical & economical" type is the availability today of off-the-shelf controllers, especially for the Nissan LEAF drive unit. Many LEAFs are scrapped for out-of-warranty batteries or collisions. Those drive units are not as in-demand as Tesla units, but they are plentiful and reliable.

It's also worth noting that they are PLENTY powerful for an older chassis.

I have a 1960 Karmann Ghia convertible, which I have long wanted to install an electric motor. Unfortunately, this Alibaba kit looks pretty lame, with a 20hp golf cart motor, and zero batteries for $2,000! But I am also not really interested in a cool classic car modded into electric operation for $250,000!! I would be excited to see a 250hp Model 3 motor, and Tesla batteries, plus the other needed bits, for maybe $12k (plus the donor car) all in.

I think that's low, but maybe OK for a LEAF based build.
